The north-western section of the national park is known as the Grumeti region taking its name from the Grumeti River; the area is home to just a handful of excusive lodges vying for the title of Africa’s leading lodge. A feature of the northern part of the vast region is the Mara River which presents a huge physical barrier during the migration, when visitors flock here to see the vast herds of wildebeest and zebra descend the steep banks and make the treacherous crossing. Lastly, the southern Serengeti is a place of huge open plains with flat topped acacia trees breaking the horizon, a quintessentially African landscape offering visitors superb wildlife-spotting opportunities during the Great Migration, otherwise, outside of this period game viewing can be more challenging. The herds of the Great Migration are often seen in the area in May & June and then again in October & November. However, the real beauty of the area lies in the fact that all parts of the Serengeti are accessible by doing a full day game drive meaning that no matter what time of year you visit you will be able to enjoy one of nature's great spectacles as well as benefit from strong resident game viewing populations.

Witness one of the incredible sights of the natural world, the Great Migration. Migrating all year to find fresh grass, these animals can zig-zag through the Serengeti following the rainfall. Best time to see them crossing in Tanzania can be June-September.
